Excerpt from
the Master of Ceremony, Vernon Church’s, speech February 8th, 1998
(during the
Praying Mantis Martial Art Institute’s 16th Anniversary Celebration)
Now, we come to a very special part of our program.
Traditionally, when students were accepted for training by a teacher, they would
perform a Tea Ceremony. During this solemn event, the student would offer tea to
the teacher as a sign of respect. The master would accept and drink the tea to
signify that the student had been chosen as a disciple.
In modern times, when schools charge tuition, almost anyone
may become a student and such formalities are reserved for special occasions.
Today, along with celebrating our 16th Anniversary and Chinese New
Year, we are very happy to announce a very special event. Master Chuy has
decided to accept three of his long time students, Raymond Lee, Vance Young and
Marlon Pilossoph, as closed door disciples.
To be accepted as a closed door disciple is one of the
highest honors in our school. It means that because of their enthusiasm in
training, the respect they have shown to Master Chuy and their loyalty to the
school and our style, these students have been chosen to be the heirs to his
knowledge of the Praying Mantis System. After today they will begin private
training that may allow them to continue his teachings to future generations of
students. Please join us in honoring our teacher, our style and these students.
