Sifu Marlon Pilossoph becoming the
4th Generation inheritor of the Sit
Family Medical System
On Sunday, October 22nd
2006, Sifu was sworn in at a Queens,
New
York cemetery at the
grave site of the Sit Family ancestors as 4th Generation
inheritor of their medical knowledge. The 1st generation of the
Sit Family was the personal physician to the royal imperial family of
China. The 2nd generation helped formulate the curriculum for
and to politically organize the first Chinese Medical Universities which
the West modeled upon. Si Tai Bak Gung, Dr. Sit graduated from the first
Medical Universities in Hong Kong at the age of 16, took over the family
Dit-Da/Osteopathic and Herbal Treatment Center before moving the family
and practice to New York’s Chinatown, establishing themselves at 123 Mott
Street, New York, New York and serving the public for over 20 years.
It was a beautiful sunny day which
began in the morning at the grave site of the Sit family. Dr. Sit, wife Peggy, his son Nelson, with his daughter Alyssa,
Sifu and Si Mo. The
ceremony began by laying out on the ground in front of 2nd generation
Dr. Sit Peng Sam’s grave, a white round table which we covered with
a red cloth. On this we positioned an incense burner, a whole roasted pig
and chicken in the center line. Across the top on the left three cups of
wine and on the right three cups of tea. In the middle to the left were placed
various sweets, like sesame buns and to the right were sweet fruits like
oranges. Closest to us on the left was placed a big fire can with which all
used to burn imitation paper money and various Chinese written scrolls, which
were on the right. After the set-up all participants lit incense and went around
to all the many surrounding graves of additional Sit clan members and
inserted three sticks of incense near their headstone and asked their spirits
to honor us with their presence and approval. Then each lit three incense
sticks for Dr. Sit Peng Sam and three for his wife who are buried side
by side. Dr. Sit verbally asked the ancestors to approve his passing of
the families medical knowledge to Sifu, after which
Dr. Sit had Sifu pour onto the ground near the head stone the wine and
the tea contained in the cups. All then burned in the fire can large amounts
of paper money and scrolls, after which all participants ate sweets and fruit.
Before leaving, Sifu and Nelson planted a purple Chrysanthemum bush and
placed white paper with stones on top of the gravestones. Red envelops (Lysee)
were exchanged and the event moved to Dr. Sit’s home where the pig
and chicken were carved. Dr. Sit presented Sifu with his fathers work table
and slicing bench which had been previously “cleaned” with herbs and
red covering. The pig, its head, feet and tail were displayed at the school
in front of the altar. A few days later Sifu and the students present had a small incense
burning ceremony, after which the students shared and partook on the
feasting of the succulent pork and the sweets from the ceremony.
